Mountain America Miracle Makers: Tommy's Story
After a horrific automobile accident left him paralyzed, former high school basketball star Tommy Hambicki found purpose and strength amid tragedy.
During the season after the crash, Tommy returned to his high school, not as a player, but as a coach. He later had the opportunity to play wheelchair basketball for the Phoenix Suns and even earned an athletic scholarship from the University of Texas Arlington in 2011.
Sadly, his story doesn’t end there. Not long after receiving the scholarship, he underwent surgery to remove a massive abscess from his leg, leading to more infections and surgeries. In the end, his wheelchair no longer fit correctly.
With a little help from the Miracle Makers, Tommy received a custom basketball wheelchair and will once again be able pursue his basketball career. He’s looking forward to playing competitively again exclaiming, “It’s kind of like wearing a brand new pair of Jordans!”
