Mountain America Launches 2022-2023 Scholarship Opportunities

Mountain America Credit Union is once again offering three scholarship opportunities to credit union members and their families. The Mountain America Scholarship Program awards much-needed financial support to three service-minded students who desire to make a difference with their careers.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average tuition and fees at four-year institutions have risen between 8–18% in the past decade. The National Center for Education Studies also reported that 66% of undergraduate students take out federal loans for post-secondary education. Scholarship opportunities like the Mountain America Scholarship Program aim to help ease these financial burdens of continuing education.

One $2,000 scholarship will be awarded in each of the following categories: community and social service, technology and trades, and finance majors.

“We are proud to support members seeking higher education in both traditional universities and vocational studies with the Mountain America Scholarship Program,” said Sharlene Wells, senior vice president of public relations at Mountain America. “What makes this program unique is that we get to highlight students who have a strong desire to make a difference and are committed to giving back to their communities.”

In 2021, Mykenna Dutton (community and social service), Andre Ramos (finance) and Packer Evans (technology and trades) were each awarded $2,000 to further their academic pursuits.

"The 2021 Mountain America Scholarship has allowed me to dedicate my time and effort to my schooling, without the stress of financing my education,” says Dutton, who is pursuing a Masters of Marriage and Family Therapy at Dixie State University. “This scholarship has been instrumental in helping me achieve my academic and professional goals, and I could not be more thankful to bank with a credit union dedicated to the success of its members."

Dutton recently started working as an intern therapist in the community, specializing in providing mental health services to LGBTQ+ youth, couples and families.

Ramos is in his first year of finance studies at Brigham Young University. "College has already taught me to be more responsible in many aspects of my life, including learning to be more careful with money management, and balancing a busy college course load and work,” he says. “But most importantly, I continue to remember the strong foundation my parents laid in order to proceed on a path that would reward me with great achievements."

This year’s application deadline is May 13, 2022. Winners will be notified, and their names announced on the company website, by June 3, 2022.
