HERO Camp Teaches Children the Responsibility of Owning a Pet

According to a recent Purdue University study, children set many of their financial habits by age seven and can grasp basic money concepts as early as age three. With only 16% of Americans ages 18-26 years feeling optimistic about their financial future, it’s clear early education is vital for future financial success.

The Humane Society of Utah’s HERO Summer Camp teaches kids how to care for furry friends. As part of the camp, Mountain America Credit Union’s financial education team hosts activities to help children understand the difference between wants and needs and saving versus spending. Children have the opportunity to understand the cost of owning a pet and develop basic money management concepts by relating a dollar amount to food, care, and other essential pet needs.
