Financial Education Expands Digitally at Mountain America

Mountain America understands the importance of providing high-quality financial education to our communities. So far, we have reached over 9,000 attendees through in-person and virtual events in 2020. With new social distancing measures in place, Mountain America has continued to provide workshops for audiences by offering live webinars and recorded sessions. These webinars are available by request and cover various topics including budgeting, credit scores, buying a home, retirement, and more.

“With the pandemic limiting in-person contact, Mountain America saw an opportunity to expand our reach with virtual offerings,” says Tony Rasmussen, vice president of financial education at Mountain America. “The past few months have revealed an increased audience appetite for virtual and digital learning. Audience sizes at Mountain America’s virtual events have increased dramatically. Events that once averaged 15-20 attendees are now averaging 75-90 attendees.

The pandemic has given us all time to reflect on many things, including finances. As a result, many of us are changing our behaviors when it comes to money. According to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, total household debt in the U.S. dropped for the first time since 2014. Credit card balances fell at a historically unprecedented $76 billion. Mountain America has been developing new seminars to address changing needs and demands. One new topic, Coping with Economic Disruption, has become a popular request. It focuses on emotional decision making, budgeting, and fluctuating income while weaving in the power of giving and accountability on happiness in stressful times. To further expand digital education, Mountain America also created an educational podcast series, Guiding You Forward, available on YouTube.

On September 9 and 10, 2020, Montain America will present a new webinar, “Investment Timing in Your Thirties.” It covers setting retirement goals that align with your values, determining the best investment strategy, and choosing the right amount of risk for you.
