Members face increased phishing and other cyberattack attempts

Mountain America Credit Union’s Information Security team is seeing an increase in phishing and other types of cyberattacks reported by our members.

The attackers use phishing and social engineering techniques, calling members and claiming to be Mountain America fraud representatives asking them to verify who they are with their username, password, codeword, PIN and other sensitive information.

The hackers send phishing emails and text messages notifying members of a transaction the member is not aware of and threaten to suspend a member’s credit/debit card or place pending payments on hold. The notification often includes a link to an impersonated Mountain America website with a fake login screen. The individuals proceed to use this information to execute fraudulent transactions.

To protect yourself and others against phishing and other cybersecurity attacks, use these IT Security Best Practices.

Additional security measures to consider:

  • Mountain America will never contact you and ask you to provide your online banking password, codeword or six-digit code. Don’t respond to emails or text messages that request personal information. If you have any doubt, call our service center at 1-800-748-4302.
  • If you receive a suspicious email claiming to be from Mountain America, forward it as an attachment to phishing@macu.com. Learn how to spot a phishing email.
  • If you opened a questionable link and shared your login credentials, codeword, PIN or other sensitive information, please call the service center at 1-800-748-4302.
    • Change your password using a complex password—a mixture of capital and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Make sure it’s at least eight characters long. Never reuse a password.
    • Monitor your accounts using our free alerts and notifications.
    • If you see any suspicious transactions, immediately contact the service center at 1-800-748-4302 or visit your nearest branch.
