His Father’s Legacy is More Than Just a Family Business | My Member Story

Rick was devastated when his father passed away. Now, he has the chance to carry on the business they built and the positive legacy left behind.

Although Rick Boomen is only in his thirties, he has already led a rich, full life. He is a formidable hockey player, experienced snowboarder, aspiring pilot, devoted son and brand-new father to sweet Annabelle.

Rick is also the owner of Bath Fitter locations in Utah and Idaho, a successful bath and shower remodeling franchise started by his late father, Bill. Rick, like his father, has always embraced a life of adventure.

Adventurous heart

One year after Bill had open heart surgery at the age of 55, he made a goal for himself to reach his full potential as an entrepreneur. To do that, he felt he had to do something drastic. So he and his family left London, Ontario, Canada and headed to the United States—first to Minnesota and then, in 2010, to Sandy, Utah where he opened a Bath Fitter franchise.

During this time, Rick was finishing up his senior year of high school and was preparing to go to college. However, he enjoyed working with his father so much, he scrapped that game plan and took another path. “I was going to go to the University of Minnesota,” he explains, “and I decided to pair up with my beautiful dad and get to work instead.”

Always up for an adventure, Rick and Bill came out to Sandy, Utah to open Bath Fitter while Rick’s mother, Marlene, stayed in Minnesota wrapping up the school year with his siblings. Bill never lost sight of his goals and Rick learned everything he could about running a successful business. The two were deeply connected.

Two of a kind

Unfortunately, Bill passed away in 2018. However, his influence endures and is evident in Rick's daily life. He strives to embody his father's positive approach to business and carry on his legacy. He recalls how Bill had a knack for making others feel valued. “He was always the kind of person who made you feel like a million bucks,” he says. “[I miss] just being in the presence of someone like that.”

Rick understands he has large shoes to fill now that he has taken over the business. Luckily, he has the support of his family and a wealth of memories and lessons from his father to sustain him. He has stepped up to become a great leader in his own right but still, even five years later, Bill’s loss is deeply felt. “I miss sitting in the office talking about nothing,” he muses. “All of a sudden, two or three hours had passed. He was my best friend.”

A family of his own

Rick and his wife, Kayla, first crossed paths in 2015 at a home show. He was there representing Bath Fitter and she was actively involved in the remodeling business. The rest, as they say, is history. Kayla helps with the marketing for Bath Fitter and, although it took some convincing, she has appeared alongside Rick in the company's ever-present commercials.

Last year, the couple embarked on a new adventure—becoming first-time parents to little Anabelle. Rick has always wanted to be a father and, now that it has happened, he finds himself putting a positive spin on all the changes that come along with that title (just like his own father would!) by saying, “I look at every day as a Friday—there’s always something to look forward to when you come home.”

A financial partner you can count on

When Bath Fitter was first getting off the ground in 2010, Rick’s mother, Marlene, was handling the finances. She knew she wanted to use a credit union but was unfamiliar with the local offerings. An acquaintance recommended Mountain America Credit Union and one day she saw a branch nearby from where the family was attending a home show.

Ever since that first day, Bath Fitter has chosen to do business with Mountain America—for everyday business accounts to construction or mortgage loans to expand their real estate ventures. Rick appreciates being able to get his questions answered quickly and knowledgeably. “It’s nice to know there is someone in your corner,” he says. “Someone who wants to see you succeed as much as you do.”

Never a dull moment

As we mentioned at the top of this story, Rick has a lot of hobbies! On any given day, he could be playing hockey, snowboarding or buzzing around the golf course. He is a self-taught guitar player and can also hold his own with the saxophone. Rick has also fallen in love with flying. He’s working on finishing the requirements for his private pilot’s license and is lucky enough to mix business with pleasure as he flies to Bath Fitter locations in Idaho and southern Utah. It's safe to say that Rick is a man of diverse talents!

Rick, we are so proud to share in your journey and, in some small way, be a part of the lasting legacy Bill left behind. We hope to witness many more accomplishments for you and Bath Fitter—maybe one day passing the torch (or is it a showerhead?) on to Annabelle.
