Founder of UnityintheCommUnity Honored by the Dream Team

Community Member, Annette Miller, steps up to help refugees and immigrants embarked on their new journey in the States.

Moving to a new country with a new language can be one of the scariest parts. Annette Miller saw the rise in refugees and immigrants in her community and was determined to offer the support they need to embark on their new journey.

Annette started a non-profit organization called UnityintheCommUnity, over 15 years ago. Through English, math and a specialized course that prepares students for the United States naturalization exam, she has been able to help refugees and immigrants during a difficult time. The UnityintheCommUnity has become more than just education by also providing essential support, including food basics, clothing, bedding and household items.

Funding for the organization is secured through donations and grants, tirelessly pursued by Annette. Her dedication even extends to organizing banquets and social activities for her students. Remarkably, all instructors volunteer their time, and Annette herself receives no salary.

"She goes the second mile. It's not just when they're here in the facility learning," reflected James Hartley who nominated Annette. "She has gone out of her way personally to help them, giving them rides when they needed to get to a doctor. I know that she and her husband have dipped into their own personal expenses from time to time.”

Classes are primarily held on weeknight evenings at West Jordan High School, welcoming students from over a dozen countries. The Dream Team stopped by with a special surprise in store for Annette! Watch the video above to see her reaction to the amazing donation to her non-profit as well as a special gift to recognize her and all her hard work.
