Mountain America Employees Ring in Pride Month with Utah Pride Center Festivities

Hundreds of Pride Festival attendees participated in financial literacy games, earning prizes; more than 70,000 people celebrated the Utah Pride Center-sponsored event in downtown Salt Lake City

On Saturday and Sunday, June 4-5, 2022, Mountain America Credit Union team members kicked off Pride Month at the Utah Pride Festival by offering the event’s over 70,000 attendees the opportunity to play financial literacy games and win prizes in support of the LGBTQ+ community.

Mountain America employees and members participated in the largest Pride celebration, per capita, in the western United States, among multitudes of live performances, parade floats and food trucks.

“I'm very happy that I work for such an inclusive company and there is a continued focus on diversity and inclusion for others,” said Drew Atwood, a senior enterprise project manager at Mountain America. “It is very important to make sure everyone has a place and feels like they belong.”

Atwood, who also serves on the Utah Pride Festival’s planning committee and logistics team, said working for a company that embraces diversity and strives to create a welcoming environment for members and employees alike makes all the difference for someone like him. Atwood is also a member of the credit union’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Council. The committee exists to foster belonging, grow community and create connections as part of Mountain America’s core culture.

“Our credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people’ applies to everyone from all walks of life,” said Trent Savage, chief human resources officer at Mountain America. “We have a diverse membership and employee base, and engaging in festivities that celebrate our LGBTQ+ friends is a key part of our inclusive culture.”

Kevin Randall, communications director for the Utah Pride Center, said the center uses sponsorships and donations to support education and resources for mental health and suicide prevention.

“It means a lot for a company like Mountain America who has so much influence in the state of Utah to be present here,” said Randall. “It's telling the thousands of people that come by the booth that you’re an ally and that means a lot to these people.”
