The CXO of the Year Award recognizes C-suite members who change the way business is done for the better across Utah

On Friday, June 17, 2022, Utah Business Magazine named Nathan Anderson, chief operating officer and executive vice president of Mountain America Credit Union, CXO of the Year for his contributions to changing the way business is done for the better in Utah.

As COO at Mountain America, Anderson is responsible for the overall member experience and operational functions, specifically the Member Service and Lending departments consisting of more than 2,200 employees. Anderson also provides leadership and strategic vision while managing the credit union’s reporting structures and operation controls to foster growth.

“Nathan plays a critical role in helping us establish a culture that attracts top-tier talent, which in turn enables us to deliver on our promise to help members define and achieve their financial dreams,” said Sterling Nielsen, president and CEO of Mountain America Credit Union. “His contributions have helped create the recipe for Mountain America’s success by ensuring our members, employees and the communities where we have branches are aligned, options are clear, actions are completed, and core values are reinforced.”

Anderson began his career at Mountain America in 2004. Since then, he has pioneered many innovative programs that helped build the credit union’s culture and enhanced its ability to provide members with outstanding experiences and products. One example is the creation of the credit union’s debt rescue program. This resource helps members easily understand how much they can save each month by refinancing their home or other assets, and makes personalized recommendations how to use that money to build a rainy-day fund.

Additionally, when the global COVID-19 pandemic forced most of the world to shelter in place and businesses struggled to survive, Anderson’s leadership enabled Mountain America to grant Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loans while other financial institutions discussed whether to offer them at all. During this challenging time, Anderson’s team funded a total of 10,637 PPP loans, which saved more than 20,000 jobs and kept small businesses’ doors open.

“I’m lucky to associate with such committed and talented professionals who are willing to do whatever it takes to help the credit union succeed in its goal of helping members define and achieve their financial dreams,” said Anderson. “Our team’s dedication to members makes a huge difference, especially when it starts at the top and flows right down to the bottom as it does at Mountain America. It's essential to have a team that’s unified in serving, adding value, protecting our employees and serving our members.”

In addition to being chief operating officer and executive vice president at Mountain America, Anderson is active in the local business community and serves on a number of boards including the executive committee of the South Valley Chamber of Commerce, the community board for Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, the Athletic Leadership Council at Brigham Young University (BYU) and the advisory council for CU Direct. During his career, he’s been recognized as one of Utah’s 40 Under 40 by Utah Business Magazine and as a Trailblazer award winner by the Credit Union Times.
