Teachers receiving grants

Mountain America Credit Union Education Grants Support Teachers in Utah, Idaho and Arizona

With the support of these grants, ten educators from three states will bring STEM, finance, drone and reading literacy lessons to life in the classroom.

Mountain America Credit Union is proud to announce ten educators have been awarded education grants of up to $2,000 to support K–12 classrooms in Utah, Idaho and Arizona. These grants will fund projects that vary in nature, from STEM bins with ready-to-use supplies, to math manipulatives and more.

Donovan Lindsay, a teacher from Blackfoot High School in Blackfoot, Idaho, applied for funds to start a new drone program. The school is looking to expand its technical programs throughout the high school and community.

“A drone class will provide the opportunity for students to learn about drone operations and procedures and their use in modern-day industry,” said Lindsay. “Drones would help the students learn, but also provide opportunities to support local businesses as well as the school with drone pictures and video.”

Sabra Gubler from Stansbury Park Elementary School in Stansbury, Utah, needed funds for Math Stackers sets to help students struggling well below the math skills benchmark.

“The kids will now be able to see numbers and increments and add them together to see the commutative and distributive properties.” Gubler said. “These hands-on learning resources will help students begin to see math not as an abstract code, but as a relatable and integral part of their lives. These resources will also last for years, which is really exciting.”

Michelle Briggs from Bonneville Academy in Stansbury Park, Utah, wants to incorporate more financial literacy skills into her lessons. She requested the grant to purchase learning material to help students plan healthy meals, budget their money, count money, write checks, pay bills and grow their own food.

“Across the board, in all my classes, food and money go hand in hand,” Briggs said. “These lessons benefit them because they learn to manage the money and decide whether it's a need or a want.”

For the past seven years, Mountain America Credit Union has awarded grants to support learning-based projects in K–12 classrooms. The 2022–2023 Mountain America Education Grant recipients are Aileen Bennett, Davis High School, Kaysville, Utah; Cindy Barney, E.G.
