Get Your Retirement Ducks in a Row

Your golden years should be filled with joy, not worry about finances. Whether you dream of traveling the world, spending precious time with grandchildren or rediscovering old passions, proper planning makes all the difference. Get your ducks in a row with these five tips.

Whether your retirement dreams are filled with travel, time with grandchildren, volunteering and activism, or resurrecting old hobbies, it is important to take practical steps to ensure you don’t have to swim against the current during your golden years.

Line up your retirement with these tips:

  1. Estimate your Social Security benefits and learn how to optimize your payout.

Create a Social Security account at ssa.gov to verify your earnings and benefits eligibility. Closely review the qualification requirements and options available based on expected future income.

  2. Target your desired retirement savings goal.

Determine how much income you will need to bring in to make your ideal retirement possible. As you consider this target number, think about the activities and lifestyle goals that are most important to you.

  3. Allocate your investments properly based on your personal risk level and preferences.

Be sure your assets are growing at the rate you need to reach your goal. Review your allocation at least annually with a wealth advisor and make necessary adjustments.

  4. Understand how longevity and inflation may impact your plans.

If you are over the age of 50, make additional contributions and invest your savings to outpace inflation and prepare for medical expenses.

  5. Create an income plan that will meet your changing needs. Ensure you will have enough funds for the life you want to live in retirement. If you are already in retirement, create a workable income plan for right now.
