Trenton and Coben Bourguet in football gear on the fieldplay

The Bourguet Factor | My Member Story

Trenton and Coben Bourguet—exceptional college athletes and inciteful students of life—talk with us about family and their love of football.

As a family of elite athletes, the Bourguets are taught the principle of teamwork from the moment they come into this world. Whether they are playing sports or doing chores, working together is essential. For Trenton and Coben Bourguet, their success on the field is guided by their success off the field.

Growing up, Trenton and Coben played many sports—football, basketball, soccer, volleyball—you name it, they’ve played it. But eventually, football became their focus. Today, as valued members of the Arizona State University (ASU) football team, they get to put their team member skills to good use. "You are only as strong as your weakest link,” explains Coben. Driven by this mindset, the brothers strive to not only to excel individually but also to elevate the entire team through their dedication on the field.

The home team

The strength and conviction they pour into their personal and athletic goals largely stems from the invaluable lessons instilled by their parents. Gifted athletes in their own right, Toby and Vanessa Bourguet have raised all six of their children to trust their faith and believe in the power of family.

That said, you can’t have a family of athletes without experiencing some mayhem. From shuttling six children back and forth to games and practices, to all kinds of team sporting games popping up inside and outside of the house—for this family, it’s the loveliest of madhouses. As Trenton puts it, "For everyone else it’s chaos, but for us that’s our family."

Trenton and Coben agree that when they are up against one of their siblings, no concessions will be given—they will all play to win. As each other's biggest fans, they derive genuine fulfillment from supporting their family, finding true satisfaction in its thriving, beyond the sweetness of victory on the gridiron.

Football is more than just a game

For the Bourguet family, football holds a significance beyond just a game. The sport includes many highs and lows, mirroring the challenges of life outside the stadium. "Football is a great metaphor for life," Trenton shares. “There are ups and downs in football and in life. It’s how you react to those situations that shows the strength of your character.”

Coben adds, “The biggest takeaway from growing up playing sports is the memories outside of the actual game.” He recalls traveling to numerous tournaments, where winning or losing held little sway over his family's joy. It's the cherished memories forged together that remain etched in his mind.
