Trenton and Coben Bourguet: Shaped by Faith, Family and Football | Guiding You Forward

It’s not every day you meet two brothers who are at the top of their game in college athletics and planning for their future after graduation and beyond.

As a financial institution, Mountain America Credit Union loves sharing money tips on our podcast to help our community define and achieve their financial goals—it is truly in our DNA. Our guests are experts in their field and enjoy giving helpful advice. Sometimes, we get the opportunity to interview someone who is outstanding in a different kind of field.

On this podcast episode, we’re joined by Trenton and Coben Bourguet in a secret, undisclosed location. Just kidding—we’re actually at the Mountain America Stadium on the Arizona State University (ASU) campus chatting about football, ASU and life goals. Plus, we throw some rapid-fire questions their way just for fun!

In this episode you will learn:

  • What the three Fs are and how this philosophy came to be their family focus.

  • The importance of the family unit.

  • How Trenton and Coben are giving back to the sporting community that helped shape them.

The three Fs

As the two oldest siblings, Trenton and Coben aren’t the only ones in the Bourguet family to excel at athletics—the next two in line, Treyson and Rylen, are both D1 athletes too. Mom Vanessa and dad Toby, who also are accomplished athletes, decided early on they wanted their kids to learn how to navigate life, not just sports. They developed a family mantra—faith, family, football—that is the basis of everything they do. While football holds a significant place in the brothers’ lives, faith and family come first. "Football is just a little fun we get to have on the side,” says Coben. “At the end of the day, it comes down to your faith and the family you’re surrounded with.”

It’s a family affair

Growing up in a family like the Bourguets, one might wonder what a typical day looks like in this rambunctious household. After citing days and nights filled with football and volleyball in the yard and basketball in the pool (not to mention having a basketball hoop inside the house!), Coben remarked, "It's kind of like you're at the Olympic Village!" Within this closely-knit circle, Trenton and Coben emphasize tackling life as a family unit. “Doing everything as a family, as a unit, is just stronger,” Coben shared. “Whether that’s on the football field or we’re going to go as a family to the library, whatever we’re doing, we’re doing it together.”

Giving back to youth sports

For Trenton and Coben, football isn't confined to just the regular season—the off-season is just as focused. Nearly every weekend before spring football starts is dedicated to coaching for the Tucson Turf youth flag football program started by their father. Coaching the kids that play in the league is their way of giving back to the youth sports that made such an impression on their own lives.
