Operation Firefly | A Dream Team Surprise

Few Utahns even realize that fireflies can be found right here in the Beehive State. Spanish Fork resident, Diane Garcia knows this fact all too well, however, as her farm is home to thousands of them. During the summer months, when mating season starts, the insects begin to glow at night in an attempt to attract a mate. Diane uses this natural event as an opportunity to educate others about fireflies and even provides guided tours to those interested in learning more about the bioluminescent insects.

Diane loves seeing the bugs twinkle at night. Recently, she has begun to worry that the continued existence of her beloved firefly population could be threatened by a new development going in near her farm. The insects need complete darkness for their light to be seen by a prospective partner. If light emissions from the surrounding areas decrease that darkness, it could spell disaster for the colony.

In order to prevent the possibility of losing the fireflies, Diane has taken it upon herself to erect a fence that will block the light emitted by the development from shining on her fields. The process has been costly and slow-going due to the large area the fence will need to surround. Watch our video where the Mountain America Dream Team surprises Diane and her daughter, who nominated her, with the news that the team will be paying for her fence.
