Making "Cents" of a Mortgage Refinance | My Member Story

In the early months of 2022, many homeowners were refinancing their mortgages in response to expectations that the Federal Reserve would soon be raising interest rates.

JR Giles was looking to do the same on the historical home in Provo, Utah where he lives with his wife and son. However, he had been putting it off for quite some time as he wasn’t looking forward to the process of talking to multiple people and attending a lot of appointments to get the loan completed.

You see, JR says he’s just not much of a people person. He prefers to stick around home, spend time with his family and learn more about coins. JR is an avid coin collector, specializing in Lincoln cents. “I love the way you can look at a coin and tell where it’s been, it’s like a book,” he says. “Every one of them are priceless.”

When he realized he was running out of time to refinance at a good interest rate, he was so happy to find out he could use the Mountain America Credit Union mobile app. “I was grateful to learn that I could apply for the loan in the convenience of my living room.”

He credits his loan officer, Jenny Glade, for providing the member service that really made the difference. JR says, “All I had to do is show up when she said, and we were done!”

After he had closed on his new mortgage, we asked JR why he took the time to leave a review. “There are too many bad reviews—people are far more likely to leave a bad one,” he says. “If I interact with someone who is exceptional and has really gone out of their way, I owe them the same.”

To JR, we say a very big and heartfelt “thank you!” Our members mean the world to us, and we’re so happy we could be there for you and your family when it mattered.
